What do they look like? Both male and female adult recluse spiders range in color from a light tan to dark brown and are 1 – 3 inches in size, including their legs. They have 6 eyes and an oval-shaped abdomen. A distinguished mark on their back looks like a violin or fiddle.

What do they eat? These nocturnal hermits thrive in dark, dry, and warm environments where they can hunt and feed on cockroaches and other insects. They do not generally spin webs to catch their prey. The brown recluse is not an aggressive spider, but it will bite when it feels threatened.

Where are Brown Recluses found?

They can be found in homes all across America, hiding in the dark corners of closets, basements, baths, attics, porches, and the like. They nest in boxes, books, clothes, shoes, furniture, and other out-of-the-way places. Outdoors in their natural habitat, they hide in gardens and storage spaces, and beneath rocks and tree stumps. The spiders can be found throughout the year, but they’re most active in spring and summer.
